As a creative, you know the challenges of “getting out there” and promoting yourself and your freelance services. You need to be a “creative shark” always on the move to find new work. You know if you stop, like the shark, you will die. Selling yourself is the hardest thing any creative has to do. We can sell our ideas to clients like crazy. When we get in the room with a client, we’re passionate, excited and motivated. It’s getting into the room where we really struggle. It’s unnecessary stress and conflict.

your stress and conflict comes from not knowing how to talk about yourself and your skills. You know you can be more successful, you know you can do the work beyond what the client could ever expect, but you just can’t seem to connect. To find something that will get them to finally notice you. That requires tangible selling points that mean something to the client. Without that, you fall back on personality to define who you are and what you can do. You’re an awesome person, but that doesn’t tell the client that you can get their website up and running.

I firmly believe this is no such thing as competition. Everyone has a niche area where they truly excel. Where the competition comes from connecting with clients and sticking in their minds. If you aren’t the first call a creative director or client makes, you’re not easy to remember.

A strong and vibrant personal brand takes the focus off you as a person and places the spotlight on your work and how it can improve the clients life. A brand gives you something to market and sell. A brand makes it easier to walk into a networking event and connect.

I find a lot of freelancer stress comes from the typical business-vendor model. One that puts you in a position you shouldn't be in. A brand makes you the equal you should be, it makes you Business to Business. A brand makes it collaborative. A brand makes the client see you as a consultant, an equal, someone they should listen to.

As a creative you see every challenge in life as a problem to solve. Selling your services shouldn’t be as hard as it has been. A brand makes life easier. Trust me, I know!
